We have much pleasure in introducing to you the first edition of ”Underground Construction – Sweden in Focus”. In April 1988, under the auspices of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, the book entitled ”Going Underground” was published. This was the first Swedish reference work about utilization of subsurface space. A large number of cases and the reasons for choosing underground solutions were presented. The book was very well received and enjoyed international recognition.

The success of ”Going Underground” has inspired us to compile the present work. We have chosen seven interesting rock construction projects and included a presentation of rock engineering research in Sweden.

The aim of this publication is to present state-of-the-art Swedish rock construction. This time, we have concentrated on projects carried out in our country, but in a planned future edition, Swedish construction activities abroad will be presented.

For your convenience, each article gives the name and address of whom to contact for further technical information. ”Underground Construction”, is produced by BK Swedish Rock Construction Committee, and SveBeFo Swedish Rock Engineering Research in co-operation.
